The Skills You Forgot to Put on Your Resume (and How to Find Them)

The biggest gap on most resumes isn’t a missing job — it’s the everyday skills you stopped noticing because they became second nature. A machinist who reads GD&T, runs SPC checks, and holds tolerances all day often writes “operated machines.” That undersells years of real capability. Here’s how to find what you left off — honestly.

Routine work hides your best skills

When something becomes automatic, you stop listing it. But the reader doesn’t know you do it unless you say so. The goal isn’t to pad — it’s to name the real things you already do that you’ve gone blind to.

Walk through a normal shift

Go hour by hour through a typical day and write down every distinct thing you handle: tools, software, standards, safety procedures, inspections, paperwork, the people you coordinate with. Most people find skills they’d never have listed from memory.

Name the standards, not just the tasks

The standards a job runs under are often the most valuable keywords — and the easiest to forget:

• Quality / manufacturing: SPC, GD&T, Gauge R&R, IATF 16949, ISO 9001
• Electrical / trades: NEC, OSHA 30, Lockout/Tagout, arc-flash
• Healthcare-adjacent: CLIA, HIPAA awareness, BLS

Only list a standard you genuinely worked under — and distinguish “worked to this standard” from “hold this certification.”

Capture the tools and software

Equipment, machines, control systems, and the software you touch (even the boring ERP or scheduling system) are all legitimate, searchable skills.

Don’t pad — confirm

The line you never cross: listing something you don’t actually do. Every item you add should be something you could demonstrate on day one. If you’re unsure whether a credential counts, describe the experience instead of claiming the credential.
